Don't Miss Everton Blender Saturday

Everton Blender - 'Goody Goody'

Reggae fans get ready… The Pisgah Brewing Company will be playing host to Everton Blender this Saturday, April 3 starting at 7:00 PM.

One of the few Jamaican singers to truly bridge the gap between the roots and dancehall reggae styles is the man known as Everton “Blender.” When reggae fans hear the opening notes of “Lift Up Your Head,” “Ghetto People Song,” “Blend Dem,” etc., they instantly recognize these songs as the cultural anthems of our time. The large number of hits Everton has accrued is most impressive for an artist who has been in the business for such a seemingly short period of time. But like many of Jamaica’s biggest musical stars, the road to fame wasn’t a short or easy one.

AshevilleLive's Faves: Best Downtown Eatery

Green Man Porter and Harmony Bowl at Laughing ...

The votes are in and Asheville has spoken! Your favorite downtown restaurant is Laughing Seed Cafe. This poll was very interesting, because Laughing Seed started out running away with the vote, but it looked at the end like it might be overtaken by Mela Indian Restaurant. The vote broke down like this:

Laughing Seed Cafe: 30%
An exclusively vegetarian and vegan restaurant located on Wall Street, the Laughing Seed has been serving up delectable healthy food here in Asheville for as long as I can remember. Most of their menu items come in vegan options, and many even come gluten-free. I have eaten there many times, and their Low Country Rollups are a staple of my diet. I’m no vegetarian, but I can tell you that you don’t have to be to enjoy what Laughing Seed has to offer. In fact, unless you’re paying attention, you probably won’t even notice that there’s no meat on your plate! Not the least expensive restaurant on our list, but certainly among the most delicious, in my own humble opinion.

Mela Indian Restaurant: 26%
Mela’s is one of the places on our list that I have never been to, but judging from the response to the poll, I will be checking it out soon. Since I’ve never been there personally, I can’t really review it, so I’ll just leave this snippet from the New York Times (yes, that New York Times):
“This sumptuous ethnic hideaway blends imported spices with local ingredients. The dark, wood-paneled space of the Indian restaurant draws a mixed crowd with dishes like Chowpatty ragada, potato patties topped with curried chickpeas, tamarind yogurt and mint chutney, and shrimp bhuna, cooked with ginger, tomatoes and green chilies. Wash it down with a Chimay beer, brewed by Belgian Trappist monks, or a glass of Champalou Vouvray. After 10, dining tables are cleared to make way for a salsa club.”

Doc Chey’s Noodle House: 20%
Doc Chey’s serves an outstanding mix of Thai, Japanese, Chinese and Indian dishes. If you like it spicy, you’ll love Doc Chey’s, although they have plenty for the more delicate palate as well. Doc Chey’s has been a local favorite since they opened their Asheville location several years ago. They use primarily locally grown ingredients, and the things they do with them will make your mouth water. Many of their dishes are vegetarian or can be prepared that way on request. From their site: “Our approach to food is simple

David Holt and the Lightning Bolts at Diana Wortham Theater

David Holt at Bele ChereDavid Holt and the Lightning Bolts will be playing at the Diana Wortham Theater, Saturday, March 27, at 8 PM. With college degrees in biology, art and elementary education, you might not be surprised to find that David Holt, 4 time Grammy winner, is a modern Renaissance Man. He plays 15 instruments, including the paper bag, and is known as a storyteller, historian, and entertainer. He founded the Appalachian Music Program at Warren Wilson College, and has traveled the world for the US State Department as a musical ambassador. He and his band will be a treat to listen to Saturday night with, among other things, a good selection of the old fashioned banjo, his favorite instrument.

Short Notice: Erika Jane & Remember the Bees at the Grey Eagle Tonight!

Erika Jane and Remember The Bees w/ Open WindowsIt’s short notice, I know, but I just found out about it and had to get it posted ASAP. One of my favorite bands, Erika Jane & Remember the Bees is playing at the Grey Eagle tonight with Pierce Edens & The Dirty Work. The show starts at 9PM and the tickets are $7 at the door. This looks to be a great show and I wish I could be there.

About Erika Jane & Remember the Bees:

Coming from the Colorado mountains, Erika Jane moved to Asheville in 2006. After recording her debut album, The Hill Creek Sessions (at lovely Hill Creek Studios), Erika Jane began playing shows around the Asheville area. Remember the Bees came together as a project in January of 2008. The driving bass drum, soulful guitar and thoughtful lyrics has intrigued a bit of local attention.

About Pierce Edens & The Dirty Work

Somewhere between the front porch and the garage, with a voice as strong as the lyrical content it is known to bellow, is Pierce Edens. With enough credentials to prove his status as both a leading songwriter and as a leading performer in the Southeast, the accolades still pile up from regional, national, and international reviews, critics, and fans. Receiving such praise as “a frenetic mix of rock-inspired carnival barker, part troubadour/part guitar-slinging vagrant” and “It would be easy to view Edens and company as a band to scuff your boots to, but if you listen a bit more closely, it quickly becomes evident that Edens is also a truly gifted songwriter.”

Christmas Eve Show at the White Horse

Christmas Eve Show at the White HorseThis Christmas Eve, saddle up and head to Black Mountain for an all-ages concert at the White Horse. Don’t forget to bring your Christmas spirit!

WHITE HORSE CHRISTMAS PRESENT

The White Horse in Black Mountain is offering a Christmas Eve Show, free to the community, on Thursday, December 24th from 6 – 8pm.

This all-ages concert promises to be a memorable one, featuring the debut of “The Wilderness Act”, an exciting new folk-duo with ancient celtic influence and powerful presentation. Bob Hinkle and Kimberly Hughes, co-owners of the White Horse, will also perform.

Lance and Carissa Moore, “The Wilderness Act”, are offering this concert as a gift to the area community.

“We really appreciate the White Horse for welcoming us and opening the doors on Christmas Eve. It is rare that songwriters can debut in a venue of this caliber and present new music to unassuming ears. It will be a bit mysterious for the audience. I expect a very magical night.” Lance Moore – Guitarist/Vocalist “THE WILDERNESS ACT” describes their show (in their own words) as:

“guitar . hammer dulcimer . voices . piano . original . ancient . Celtic . spirited . mystery . harmony . love . hope . humor . peace . passion . intensity . interested?”

The White Horse is located in downtown Black Mountain at:
