Outdoor Fun in North Asheville

Woodpecker at Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary
We are so fortunate to live so close to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, which offers infinite hiking trails to explore. But even when we don’t have time for a drive on the parkway, Asheville has many great spots right in town to convene with nature.
Just north of downtown one can find the tranquility of sitting on a rock along a stream at the Botanical Gardens, adjacent to the UNCA campus. Explore the gardens and walk the trails which meander next to a nice flowing creek. Or bring a Frisbee and blanket, have picnic in the grassy field, it’s a great spot for the family or a peaceful moment to yourself.
Farther north down Merrimon Ave. is the Bird Sanctuary. Asheville’s hidden pocket of wetlands is home to an array of birds. With boardwalks and decks overlooking Beaver Lake this is a favorite among locals. In spring discover buttercups blooming, creating a field of yellow flowers. There’s a perfect climbing tree near the water which is often occupied by anyone from five to fifty-five in its hanging branches.
You could also take a stroll with the dog around Beaver Lake. Watch the ducks glide across the water and heron gazing for fish. Enjoy the beautiful mountain range view beyond the peaceful lake. Keep your eyes peeled I have seen a moccasin swimming by before.
Are the kids in the mood to slide and swing? Jones Park and Weaver Park are both of Merrimon. There’s a walking trial around the baseball field at Weaver Park along with a swing set and a modest play area. Jones Park playground is by far a more deluxe play area and is usually full of kids having a great time.
One visit alone and you’ll have a new favorite spot. Asheville’s north side offers glorious green areas, perfect for relaxing quietly on a soft blanket or letting the kids run wild. Take a break and see for yourself. Enjoy!
