GWU roundup: Golf, soccer, volleyball, cross country

CHAPEL HILL — The Gardner-Webb men’s golf team posted a 13th-place team finish over the weekend at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finely Golf Course.

Gardner-Webb posted rounds of 307, 305 and 304 to finish with a three-round combined team score of 52-over 916 at the two-day event that wrapped up Sunday.

Junior Matt Yelverton shot rounds of 77, 73 and 73 to tie for 33rd at 7-over 223. Other GWU golfers were Blake Maum (16-over 232), Daley Byles (20-over 236), Steven Jones (20-over 236) and Clement Kurniawan (22-over 238).

Georgia Tech won the event at 22-under 842, followed by second-place N.C. State at 2-under 862.

Gardner-Webb will co-host the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate at the Myrtle Beach National Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Sept. 23-24.

 

Women’s soccer

USC Upstate 1, Gardner-Webb 0 — The Spartans’ Rachel Baylor scored on a header off a corner kick in the 82nd minute to lift the visitors in the final game of the Under Armour Border Classic in Boiling Springs.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Shelby Hooe, Megan Loftin and Amy Schmitt made the all-tournament team.

GWU (2-4-1) plays at Troy at 4 p.m. Friday.
