Haywood County is no stranger to the silver screen. It was a star in the blockbuster movie “Cold Mountain,” and will be there again when “Serena” comes out later this year. But neither of these place-based novels set in Haywood were actually filmed here — the production companies went overseas instead.
But Haywood’s tourism leaders aren’t giving up on the idea of turning the county into a film hotspot — not just for movies, but TV shows, reality shows, commericals, even catalog shoots.
They have revived the idea of a Haywood Film Commission, something that was around in the 1980s but had fizzled over the years.
“And we’re going to change that,” Seymour said.
When a production company begins looking around for potential locations to film, whether it be a major motion picture, independent project, music video or commercial, there are three categories they address — location, support services and crew.
Location could be a bustling city or backwoods farm, where support services can encompass catering, engineers and makeup artists, while crew can be those with editing and marketing backgrounds. The possibilities are as endless as the positions that need to be filled when the cameras

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation has announced the election of officers to its Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, respectively.
The officers began their one-year terms on Jan. 1, and recently led their first board meeting in Charleston, S.C. In addition, the National Restaurant Association has named several industry leaders to join its board.
“The National Restaurant Association Board of Directors and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Board of Trustees are instrumental to the continuing success of the industry and our members,” said Dawn Sweeney, president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, in a press release. “This year, our boards are fortunate to be led by industry veterans Ken Conrad and Mike Gibbons. Their leadership and expertise will provide valuable guidance as our industry navigates complex challenges in the year ahead.”
The NRA expects restaurants to add 1.3 million new positions in the next decade, pushing industry employment to 14.8 million by 2024. To support this growth, the NRA board consists of roughly 100 voting directors, representing every facet of the industry.

RALEIGH Citing a desire to get it right, state commerce officials are slowing down the planned move of the job recruiting and marketing functions of the Commerce Department to a nonprofit partnership.
During an update to lawmakers Tuesday, commerce officials said the move of five Commerce Department divisions to the new Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina wont begin until July at the earliest.
My experience is speed is not good if you want to do things well, said Richard Lindenmuth, the recently named interim chief executive officer of the partnership. The other part of speed is that its very hard to communicate and be transparent to those people who are interested and concerned that we are doing the right things.
An earlier proposal anticipated that two divisions that recruit new businesses and market the state would move to the partnership in the first half of the year, followed later by three others: Small Business and Entrepreneurship; International Trade and Investment; and Travel Tourism, Film and Sports Development. Combined, the five divisions have a budget of about $20 million.

David Hume of Scotland might well be the most important philosopher ever to write in English, but when he penned that line in back in the 1700s in “Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion,” he unfairly dissed the oyster.
To make up for Hume’s insult – or maybe just to have fun, celebrate the tasty bivalve and raise some money – the N.C. Coastal Federation has scheduled a statewide oyster “Shellebration” for March 1.

With $20.8 million in federal emergency funding, work began last week on rebuilding dunes along N.C. 12 at Mirlo Beach and Rodanthe, where Hurricane Sandy and later storms washed out or covered sections of the road. Replenishing the beach at Rodanthe is also scheduled.

The Army Corps of Engineers, meanwhile, is continuing to dredge the channel between Hatteras and Ocracoke. Temporary ferry service is now available. Full service is expected to return in mid-April, ahead of the summer tourism season.

N.C. Beer Month, brought to you by the state’s Division of Tourism, is a 30-day celebration of the craft beer industry. The group wants pint lovers to head out – responsibly, of course – to breweries across the state for all-things beer. That includes specialty brews, beer dinners, beer cooking classes, beer making and “beer memories” intended to last longer than those from college.
It’s called beer tourism, and local breweries are ready for you to belly up to the bar.
Wilmington’s Front Street Brewery is participating all month with pint specials, a beer-pairing dinner and a limited-edition beer with an undeniable coastal flavor.
Brewmaster Kevin Kozek took a bushel of Eagle Island Fruit Seafood oysters up to NoDa Brewing Co. in Charlotte where he and the NoDa crew brewed an oyster stout. He said it’s a dark, English-style stout with notes of briny oysters.
