9/11 anniversary being marked with somber tributes – Asheville Citizen

A look at events marking the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks:

NEW YORK CITY

In a sadly familiar ceremony, friends and relatives of World Trade Center attack victims gathered at the National Sept. 11 Memorial plaza to call out the names of the dead and read messages to lost loved ones.

A bell chimed to mark the moments when four hijacked jets crashed into the twin towers, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, and again to mark the moments when the two skyscrapers collapsed.

Several politicians attended, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former New York Gov. George Pataki, but none gave an address.

The ceremony also recognized victims of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

WASHINGTON

President Barack Obama held a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. on the White House’s South Lawn to mark the first attack in New York. He was joined by Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden. A bugler played “Taps.”

Then, the president traveled to the Pentagon Sept. 11 memorial in Arlington, Va., where victims’ families, attack survivors and military officials laid a wreath and held

Rice Diet shuts down NC home after 70 years – Asheville Citizen

The diet earned millions of dollars for Duke University and helped its medical center establish a reputation as a pioneer in the science and psychology of obesity.

Durham became known as one of the world’s dieting centers as Duke University later opened its Duke Diet Fitness Center, followed in the 1970s by the independent Structure House. A 2009 estimate put the value of those visitors at $80 million a year, but there are no more recent figures, said Shelly Green, president of the Durham Convention Visitors Bureau.

The medical center’s executives had a long and fraught relationship with Kempner. Some details became public after one of Kempner’s former patients sued him and Duke in 1993. Sharon Ryan alleged that between 1970 and 1987 the doctor whipped her bare buttocks with a riding crop when she violated Kempner’s strict rules by gaining weight. Kempner said in a deposition he thought the risk to his patients’ lives was so great if they deviated from his regimen that it warranted harshness.

Five years after Kempner died, Duke severed its ties to the Rice Diet in 2002 and Robert Rosati, who had already been working

Tea has come a long way from the white-glove formality of Downton Abbey. A new generation of tea lounges has emerged, emphasizing that the drink is healthy and hip, says Karen Palmer, Good Taste editor of TastingTable.com. “Even though they’re serving a centuries-old beverage, they’re putting their new spin on it, and making it a modern place for everyday enjoyment.” She shares some favorite

Whimsical hiker sculpture wins Best in Show award

By Emily Ford

SALISBURY — The sculpture of a whimsical figure displayed on the Rowan Public Library lawn has won the Norvell Best in Show Award.

“Go Take a Hike” by artist Davis Whitfield of Mountain City, Tenn. combines motion and whimsy with engaging asymmetry, said judge Noelle Rhodes Scott, who recently selected winners of the 2013 Salisbury Sculpture Show Discover What’s Outside.

“It appeals to both children and adults with its square and rounded shapes of the joints and knees and its back bent as though in exertion,” said Scott, Cabarrus Arts Council president and CEO.

Scott reviewed the 14 sculptures on display in Salisbury, starting with a

Largest Ferris wheel nears completion in Las Vegas – Asheville Citizen

LAS VEGAS — The madcap carnival on the Las Vegas Strip is getting another over-the-top addition: the world’s largest Ferris wheel.

The outer wheel of the 55-story High Roller ride is scheduled to be hoisted into place Monday. The gargantuan project is now visible from all over the city, including the airport. Early next year, it will be outfitted with 1,500 LED lights, and start its slow spin.

“It’s going to be an icon,” Project Director David Codiga said. “It’s going to be a part of your visit to Las Vegas if you ride it or not. It’s more or less impossible not to see it if you come here.”

Caesars Entertainment Corp., which owns more casinos than any other U.S. gambling company, is building the ride as part of its $550 million Linq development, a new outdoor plaza across the street from Caesars Palace.

The walking mall, sandwiched between the Flamingo and Harrah’s hotel-casino, is expected to open this winter. It’s designed to lure Gen Xers and millennials, demographics Caesars believes will contribute a majority of Sin City tourist dollars by 2015.

City after city has jumped to put a

Ashtoberfest: Zombie walk dead for 2013 in Asheville – Asheville Citizen

Slow-walking eaters love their fast food.

My favorite moment from my time at the fifth-annual Ashtoberfest Zombie Walk on Saturday was when I encountered the undead hordes at the Biltmore Square Mall food court.

It’s like Chick-fil-A had brain on the menu.

Of course, the walking dead were ordering waffle fries and nuggets, just like hungry, unsuspecting mall patrons who left the mall with more than their new bedsheets from Dillard’s.

But that was what made it so funny: I caught these crazed cannibals acting like the folks cast as zombie bait in the movies.

It was the type of quiet scene that really brought the festival to life for me. I collected all these moments that if you just removed all the fake blood, it would be like any other Saturday night at the mall. Teenage girls giggling and gossiping, flirting with unsure boys. Ladies touching up their hair and makeup in the bathroom mirror.

These unplanned, very human moments, lightened the event’s dark undead theme. It’s truly just another excuse to build community and celebrate all the frivolous fun that separates life from death.

There was also a lot of joy in the planned aspects of the first-time festival — the walk has

Charlotte teen launches hot business: Selling salsa

The ingredients listed on the label of Cassandra’s Garden Salsa are tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, banana pepper, lime juice, salt, garlic and chili powder. But Cassandra Brown knows a lot more goes into it than that.

Since she began selling her salsa at Charlotte-area Harris Teeter stores in late May, Cassandra, a 16-year-old junior at Providence Day School, has learned more about business than many people do in a lifetime. She’s also learned a lot about herself and what she can accomplish, as well as the importance of supportive family and friends.

“It’s been an amazing experience in many ways,” Cassie says. “It’s a lot of hard work, but I’ve also had fun with it. And my family has been a big help.”

Cooking up a business

Family is where it all began. Cassie’s grandfather is a farmer, which inspired her love of gardening at an early age.

“When I was 6, I made a garden with tomatoes, peppers, that kind of thing,” she says. “When I was 9, we started to make salsa and sell it to friends because we had so many tomatoes and peppers that we had to
