Carl Sandburg Home to host free family festival Saturday

FLAT ROCK, N.C. – Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will host Fall Into the Farm on Saturday, September 21. The family-friendly festival highlights the Sandburg family’s farm life and features a professional puppeteer, square dancing, fairy poem hunt, butter and cheese-making demonstrations and children’s crafts.

During the event, free tours of the Sandburg home will be available from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Young visitors are encouraged to participate in the Junior Ranger program to learn more about the park and Carl Sandburg.

At the barn, families can learn what a goat eats and how that helps it make milk. Visitors can even make their own butter, watch a cheese-making demonstration and get a taste of Mrs. Sandburg’s special recipes.

Throughout the day, an activity station will be available for families to create a corn husk Corn Fairy, one of Sandburg’s beloved Rootabaga Stories characters. LEXINGTON, Va. – Freshman Kristen Whitehurst scored two goals, one in each half, to propel the VMI Keydets past the Delaware State Hornets, 2-0, in women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field in Lexington. The win gave the Keydets their first two-match win streak since 2009 and their first clean sheet against a Division I opponent since Sept. 16, 2011.

The eventual game-winner came in the 37th minute, when Nicole Blixt sent a low, arching pass into the box from the left flank. Myranda Emery quickly found Whitehurst, cutting in from the right of DSU (0-4) goalkeeper Katelyn Koslosky, and the freshman tipped it home to give the Keydets a 1-0 advantage. The Keydets added on in the 86th minute, when Meredith Baldasare made a perfect pass from 20 yards out, finding Whitehurst cutting into space on Koslosky’s right once again. The freshman took three dribbles and drilled it by Koslosky, icing the second straight VMI (2-3) win.

On the defensive end, Emily Marbury pitched the shutout for the Keydets as, for the first time this season, VMI used just one goalkeeper in a game. Marbury moved to 2-2 with the win, as she was credited with four saves.

CHAPEL HILL — The Gardner-Webb men’s golf team posted a 13th-place team finish over the weekend at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finely Golf Course.

Gardner-Webb posted rounds of 307, 305 and 304 to finish with a three-round combined team score of 52-over 916 at the two-day event that wrapped up Sunday.

Junior Matt Yelverton shot rounds of 77, 73 and 73 to tie for 33rd at 7-over 223. Other GWU golfers were Blake Maum (16-over 232), Daley Byles (20-over 236), Steven Jones (20-over 236) and Clement Kurniawan (22-over 238).

Georgia Tech won the event at 22-under 842, followed by second-place N.C. State at 2-under 862.

Gardner-Webb will co-host the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate at the Myrtle Beach National Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Sept. 23-24.

Women’s soccer

USC Upstate 1, Gardner-Webb 0 — The Spartans’ Rachel Baylor scored on a header off a corner kick in the 82nd minute to lift the visitors in the final game of the Under Armour Border Classic in Boiling Springs.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Shelby Hooe, Megan Loftin and Amy Schmitt made the all-tournament team.

GWU (2-4-1) plays at Troy at 4 p.m. Friday.

GIGLIO ISLAND, Italy (AP) – Authorities have given the final go-ahead for a daring attempt Monday to pull upright the crippled Costa Concordia cruise liner from its side in the waters off Tuscany, a make-or-break engineering feat that has never before been tried in such conditions.

The ship capsized there 20 months ago, and Italy’s national Civil Protection agency waited until sea and weather conditions were forecast for dawn Monday before giving the OK to try to right it. In a statement Sunday, the Civil Protection agency said the sea and wind conditions “fall within the range of operating feasibility.”

The Concordia struck a reef near Giglio Island the night of Jan. 13, 2012, took on water through a 230-foot gash in its hull and capsized just outside the harbor. Thirty-two of the 4,200 passengers and crew members died. The bodies of two of the dead have never been recovered, and may lie beneath the wreckage.

Never before have engineers tried to right such a huge ship so close to land. If the operation succeeds, the Concordia will be towed away and broken up for scrap.

Salvage experts had originally hoped to right the 115,000-ton vessel last spring, but heavy storms hampered work. Crews

There was a family reunion at Fulton tonight as they hosted Farragut. The Admirals Head Coach, Eddie Courtney, played under Fulton’s Assistant coach, Bob Black, years ago at Fulton when Bob was the Head Coach. Both schools are coached by father-son duos and each were ready to reunite on the field. However, Fulton would not end their high-scoring trend against this distant Falcon family member. This is the fourth game of the season for Fulton and no team has been able to score against the strong Falcon defense. Until tonight when the Admirals were able to at least break this trend and score on Fulton which has proven to be a tough task the last three weeks as their combined scores added up to 161-0. Fulton would take complete control once again of a 55-7 win over Farragut.
