RALEIGH — North Carolina’s most vocal gun rights group is threatening to sue Raleigh if it doesn’t update signs in city parks that tell visitors firearms aren’t allowed.

Grass Roots North Carolina sent a letter to the Raleigh City Council this week, requesting an update to the signs now that state law allows concealed-carry permit holders to bring guns to playgrounds, greenways and college campuses.

In an email, Raleigh parks director Diane Sauer told the group it would be too expensive to replace all signs in the city’s 100-plus parks – especially because state lawmakers might change the rules again.

“Due to costs associated with and the potential of this coming up again, we are not going to replace all signs at once,” Sauer wrote to a Grass Roots member. “As signs are replaced (age or damage) or new signs are added, we will include updated information.”

Grass Roots North Carolina president Paul Valone says he doesn’t buy that argument.

“I find that disingenuous,” Valone said. “It’s not too expensive – you don’t have to replace them or anything, just take them down.”

Charlotte’s own pastor, the Rev. Billy Graham, is home after he was released from the hospital Thursday.

Followers of his crusade are lifting up support and prayers for him.

Graham spent two nights at Mission Hospital after he was admitted for tests on his lungs.

Two people who are close to Graham told Channel 9 he got out of the hospital shortly after lunchtime and is home Thursday night and doing well.

Nearly everyone Channel 9 spoke with in Montreat they had heard he was in the hospital in Asheville.

A spokesperson said Thursday afternoon that Graham had gone to the hospital on Tuesday for medical pulmonary tests and stayed two nights.

He was alert the whole time and did not have any problems with the scheduled tests.

Several people said they’ve been praying for Graham, whose 95th birthday is just two weeks away.

“My prayers are he stays healthy and with his upcoming last message that is coming out in November. We’re looking forward to that,” said resident Steve Freeman.

“He is right up the road. His house is built out of an old cabin. He is an iconic figure in America,” said resident Kent

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Gardner-Webb forward Denzel Clarke notched his third hat trick of the season, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs blanked UNC Asheville 5-0 on “Senior Night” Wednesday night at Greene-Harbison Field.

Gardner-Webb increased its current winning streak to three straight matches and improved to 7-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the Big South with the win. Asheville falls to 4-10-0 and 1-5-0 in the Big South with the loss.

Clarke recorded the first three goals of the match to post his third hat trick of the season and become the first Runnin’ Bulldog to have three hat tricks in the same season in GWU’s Division I history. The three goals increased his season total to 15 on the year.

LEXINGTON, Va. – In a contest that saw the teams battle both each other and the elements, the UNC Asheville Bulldogs got a diving save from goalkeeper Heather Muller with 26 seconds to go to preserve a 1-0 victory over the VMI Keydets in Big South women’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon at VMI’s Patchin Field. 

With Asheville (6-9-2, 2-5-2 Big South) nursing a one-goal lead in a driving rain, VMI’s (3-13, 1-8 BSC) Myranda Emery found space to Muller’s left on the right side of the field. Emery, cutting from left to right, settled herself and laced a low bullet toward the lower right of the net, but Muller made a sprawling save to her left and controlled the rebound, preserving the victory. 

Kennedy Garrett, Asheville’s leading scorer, tallied in the 60th minute for the day’s lone goal. Amanda Knapp picked up the assist on the play. Emery led the Keydets in shots with four on a day that saw the teams deadlocked in that statistic, 15-15. Perhaps the day’s most critic stat, however, saw VMI draw a stunning 11 offside violations to three for the Bulldogs.
