Northern Kentucky (0-1) at (1) Kentucky (1-0) (ET)

GAME NOTES: A first-ever meeting between inhabitants of the Bluegrass State takes place this afternoon, as the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats entertain the Norse of Northern Kentucky.

Expected to be a major force this season, even after being a disappointment in 2012-13 when they finished only 21-12 overall and 12-6 in SEC play, the Wildcats got off on the right foot Friday as they easily dismissed UNC Asheville at home, 89-57.

Kentucky, one of the most successful programs in the history of Division I college basketball, now has a mark of 91-19 in season-opening games, including 5-0 under head coach John Calipari.

As for the Norse, members of the Atlantic Sun Conference these days, they too began the season two nights ago, but they were on the road and came up short in a narrow 77-76 final at Purdue.

Now in his 10th season at Northern Kentucky, head coach Dave Bezold is hoping his team can improve upon a disappointing 11-16 mark from a year ago when the Norse began with six straight defeats.

A 3-pointer by Tyler White with just under a minute remaining in regulation on Friday gave the Norse a 76-72 advantage over Purdue, but

HomeArama opens Saturday at Cheval in Mint Hill

At HomeArama, which opens Saturday at Cheval in Mint Hill, all six of the showhouses feature open kitchens with eye-catching islands as centerpieces. In four of the six, cabinets are painted gray. Both the layouts and colors reflect today’s favorite family trends.

One lesson for visitors, who turn to the showcase for ideas and inspiration, is how different the kitchens look and feel. A subtle undertone in color, a subdued instead of sparkling backsplash, will personalize the heart of the home.

It’s like accessorizing a classic gray suit, so it serves you perfectly. “Absolutely,” said Diane Austin, who represents Cheval developer Keith Paris. “And the homes, the kitchens, the outside spaces, the … multigenerational spaces, are perfectly designed for how people live their lives today.”

HomeArama, the region’s largest showcase of furnished and decorated new homes, is hosted by the Home Builders Association of Charlotte. Builders this year are Evans Coghill Homes, Grandfather Homes, Classica Homes, Arthur Rutenberg Homes and Bellamy Homes.

Gray also is a dominant color throughout the showcase. (The master suite in the Grandfather home is Sherwin-Williams “Dorian Gray,” a fun play on the classic story.) Notice that some grays feel

Recap: Kentucky vs. UNC-Asheville

Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) – With so many freshman on the roster, maybe it wasn’t surprising Kentucky got off to such a slow start in its first game.

Once the top-ranked Wildcats found their rhythm, however, it wasn’t much of a test.

Julius Randle had 23 points and 15 rebounds in his college debut and Kentucky rolled in the second half Friday night on the way to an 89-57 victory over UNC-Asheville.

Randle is one of six freshman on the Kentucky roster who were high school All- Americans and all six contributed, though Wildcats coach John Calipari griped about some things.

Randle had 15 rebounds when he could have had at least 20, Calipari said. He said Randle “stopped playing” when shots went up and wasn’t happy with how he distributed the ball.

“How about the back doors? Throw to the elbow, the guy on the wing,” said Calipari. “How about three seconds on the clock, they take it out, throw it to the post, the guy spins and throws it to his man and he fouls. That was Julius.”

“Now, let me say this: Their first college game. Their first college game,” the coach said.

Indeed.

Among the other All-Americans, Marcus Lee had 17 points, James Young scored

Return to Asheville a heartening experience

I was a radio announcer for Zeb Lee at WSKY in the mid-1970s and fell in love with Asheville. I brought my children up to Asheville this past weekend, and the vibe of the city and the entire area is still wonderful. A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway renewed my spirit and my energy. The city still is the most beautiful city in America. Asheville, your kindness to visitors is appreciated.
