BEIJING – A few hours after having laughed it up with workers in Tokyo, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden found himself in face-to-face meetings Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping over China’s controversial new air defense zone.
The China leg of Biden’s swing through Asia was supposed to be on how the two nations could cooperation on economic matters but China’s recent announcement that it controls the air space over the East China Sea, including island territories of Japan, made for a tense mood.
Biden was greeted with state-controlled press stories lashing out at the United States for standing with Japan to complain about the air defense zone that China says requires all aircraft passing through to notify it of their presence.
The announcement is the latest attempt by China’s Communist government to lay claim to nearly 1 million square miles of sea and all the energy and fishing resources it contains.
After five hours of meetings, a noticeably somber Biden told the assembled press that the U.S.-China relationship will significantly affect the course of the 21st century, and, done right, the possibilities are limitless.
“Candor generates trust,” Biden said of Xi’s “candid” attitude. “Trust is the basis on which real change – constructive change

Krzyzewskiville, a lawn filled with lounging students and dotted with tents, houses lengthy pregame lines for Duke home games. It is named for legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University is one of the finest private research universities in the United States. Alexander Rickabaugh and Jason Frogh are freshmen, but they’re getting the hang of the research part.
Back before Thanksgiving, the two wandered around with friends, casually asking, “So when are you gonna set up for the Michigan game?”
Those asked were none the wiser. This was shrewd reconnaissance.
Standing barefoot on crabgrass Monday, Rickabaugh and Frogh basked in the trickery. For this game, they and six friends own the ultimate distinction on this campus. Their names top the list in Krzyzewskiville.
They’re first in line.
All it took was three days of camping.
“My dream come true,” Frogh said.
Four hundred and eighty Duke students were on the list as of nightfall Monday.
Like religious pilgrims forming pop-up cities at the convergence of the Ganges and the Yamuna, Krzyzewskiville appears over night and sprawls out from the Northwest corner of Cameron Indoor Stadium. It’s a pregame holy land named in

Whether you’re taking a girlfriend on a romantic date or trying to find good local grub, the Aiken Visitors Center and Train Museum’s new brochure maps out all the best spots for residents and visitors.
The brochures take visitors and residents in Aiken through Hitchcock Woods to the Aiken Trolley Tours all the way to nighttime hot spots like Aiken’s own microbrewery at the Aiken Brewing Company.
“Aiken citizens and visitors have shared with us that they see Aiken as an interesting and welcoming community,” City Manager Richard Pearce said. “To promote just some of what Aiken has to offer, we turned to active community volunteers who shared their favorite things to see and places to stop in.”
The Visitors Center partnered with Aiken Young Professionals and other local professionals to come up with an informational and fun brochure to bring more traction to the downtown area.
For visitors, the brochure has information on how to drive through the downtown area, where to find local organizations on social media and of course in the South, advice on saying, “Hello.”
“I hope that these new quirky maps not only assist in enhancing

It’s like learning to swim by being pushed off the high dive – and Mason Barrett just got shoved. The 33-year-old real estate agent sits wide-eyed in a tiny, crowded living room in Madagascar’s capital city, trying desperately to understand what anyone around him is saying. Hands fly in a flurry of conversation, mostly get-to-know-you type questions: What’s your name? Are you married? Were you born deaf? That last question might sound strange if this wasn’t one of the thousands of Deaf communities that Barrett has come to serve. He’s part of a team from Warren Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga., that has traveled more than 9,000 miles for a single purpose: sharing Jesus with the Deaf Malagasy.
Tucked away off Africa’s eastern coast, Madagascar is home to roughly 110,000 Deaf, less than 1 percent of whom are disciples of Jesus Christ. Most follow a centuries-old tradition of ancestor worship. There may be a “veneer of Christianity,” says missionary Matt Spann, a Texas native who leads the International Mission Board’s (IMB) Madagascar team, but “they fear their ancestors more than they fear God.” That’s what Warren has come to
