McCrory lights State Capitol Christmas tree

Hundreds of people gathered on the south grounds of the State Capitol Thursday evening to watch Gov. Pat McCrory light the Capitol Christmas tree.

“It’s advent, so every day we have an activity,” said Annie Frank, who brought her daughters, Lola and Sophie, to the event to help them learn the importance of family and traditions.

“I have all sorts of different things on like driving around to go see the lights and coming to do this,” Frank said. “At this age, it’s kind of hard, but maybe if we do something every day, they’ll get it.”

Sarah Davis is also getting her daughter started early. This will be Emma Catherine’s first Christmas and the family’s first holiday in the Triangle.

“We’ve just moved to Raleigh and wanted to see what the town had to offer,” Davis said.

Kelly Cherry and her organization, the Junior Woman’s Club of Raleigh, handed out hot cider and cookies at the event, which also included performances by local musicians. She said the tree-lighting encourages the community to come together.

“It’s just a great opportunity for everyone to come out

Rare owl sighting a hoot for regional bird watchers

“I knew it was an owl, but I never dreamed of it being a snowy owl,” Maybin said. After all, who would think they’d see an arctic predator thousands of miles south of its native range? And the auto mechanic surely never imagined the owl in his yard would put the birding world all atwitter.

“I didn’t know that it was a big thing,” Maybin said. “The first five (bird-watchers) that came, the lady who I think is the head of their group, she told me, ‘Do you care if I tell people?’ I said, ‘No, you go right ahead.’ I had no idea how many would show up.”

By Monday, at least 300 birders from as far away as South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee had descended on Maybin’s farm in the upper French Broad River valley to glimpse the rare owl, the first known sighting of a snowy owl in Western North Carolina in modern history.

“I just can’t believe one bird could draw that much attention,” Maybin said.

They do when they’re Harry Potter’s charismatic pet in the movies, and when few people have ever laid eyes on one in real life. Reports of the iconic owl lit up the birder

Geraldine’s Bakery open house

Geraldine’s Bakery will celebrate its recent opening with an open-house event 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Geraldine’s, located in the former spot of Sisters McMullen Bakery on Merrimon Avenue, opened its doors on Nov. 18 after owner Fred Dehlow, a second-generation baker from New York, bought the business from Andrea McMullen.

Dehlow is styling Geraldine’s as a traditional, neighborhood bakery and says he looks forward to becoming a valued part of the North Asheville community. “I’m not calling it a grand opening,” says Dehlow. “The people in the area have been very kind in welcoming me to the neighborhood, so I thought it would be nice to give back some.”

Visitors to the open house can expect a free cup of coffee and a doughnut along with a chance to sample many of Geraldine’s baked goods. “It should be a fun time,” says Dehlow.

The bakery offers fresh, scratch-made bagels, rolls, Danish pastries, pies, cakes and cookies, as well as sandwiches — all made using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible.

Geraldine’s is at 840 Merrimon Ave.840 Merrimon

Keeping Asheville on the map for tourists

ASHEVILLE — This city has long banked on premier attractions such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Biltmore Estate and the century-old Grove Park Inn to bring in tourists and their dollars.

But developing the destination and ensuring a future flow of visitors and money will take new products and new investments, a tourism consultant said Wednesday.

“A lot of destinations are becoming too generic,” said Mike Konzen, chairman and principal of PGAV Destinations, a consulting group based in St. Louis. “You have a chance here in Asheville to create something special.”

About 150 people packed the banquet hall of the U.S. Cellular Center to brainstorm the next best attractions for Asheville as a destination.

Tourism is big business for Buncombe County, totaling $2.3 billion in annual economic impact, said Stephanie Brown, executive director of the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau. Buncombe alone draws more than 9 million visitors and 3.1 million overnight guests each year, who in turn support some 23,000 local jobs.

Brown called the event “an opportunity to put on our community thinking cap, to get the juices of the people who created what Asheville has become, and
