Elk from viral YouTube video euthanized

An elk that butted heads with an Asheville, N.C., photographer in Great Smoky Mountains National Park was euthanized Friday after a YouTube video of the encounter went viral.

That video had garnered almost 1 million views and more than a 1,000 comments, though park officials said the elk had become used to eating people food and was a problem before approaching the photographer.

In the end, the elk was done in as much by Doritos as it was by the video fame, the park said.

The decision to euthanize the elk was a first for the park, spokeswoman Dana Soehn said.

The video “was the first incident that we know of that the elk engaged in physical contact” with a visitor, Soehn said. The footage “was a critical step in the decision-making” to euthanize.

“This was not a one-time incident,” she said. “(The video) was a trigger; the physical contact escalated our decision.”

The video, shot Oct. 20 along the Cataloochee Trail, shows the male elk head-butting James York, who was sitting along the trail shooting still photographs. Neither York nor the elk were hurt.

York said he was “truly saddened” by the decision to put down the animal. “I was really looking

Big South volleyball tournament opens today at PC

Visitors to Presbyterian College’s Templeton Center for Thursday’s tip-off to the Big South Volleyball Tournament had better expect to be close to the players of their respective teams.

“We sit really close to the court,” PC Athletic Director Brian Reese said. “You are right on top of the action.”

It is PC’s “time in the rotation,” Reese said, for playing host to a conference championship. The Thursday through Sunday win-or-go-home championship will be Presbyterian College’s first Big South championship.

“PC has done an outstanding job preparing for the event,” Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander said. “We find that these small markets really embrace these events. This is a great opportunity to see some really good college volleyball.”

Reese said competition among the Big South volleyball teams has grown fierce as the seedings for Thursday’s tournament grew closer. Seedings were announced Sunday – Radford, out of Virginia, is the top-seeded volleyball team in the Big South.

PC plays Thursday – on home court – first serve at 7:30 p.m. against No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina.

“This is just like March Madness,” Kallander said. “The winner advances to the NCAAs.”

Kallander talked to The Chronicle about PC and Clinton playing host to the volleyball tournament following his
