Catawba Brewing announces revised plans for Asheville brewery

Catawba Brewing Company welcomed the new year with an update on its plans to open a second brewing facility and tasting room in Asheville. The Morganton-based brewery had begun renovations last summer on a building at 2 Fairview Road in the Biltmore Village area but city of Asheville officials put a halt to the project.

Catawba announced in a Jan. 1 statement that it will move forward by tearing down the existing structure and starting from scratch, building a two-story brewery and tasting room with outdoor beer garden areas. Construction is expected to begin in February with a projected midsummer completion date.

In the meantime, Catawba plans to set up a temporary tasting room starting in early February in an old strip mall at 63 Brook St., across the street from Fig restaurant and its 2 Fairview Road site. The company has already hired an Asheville manager and hopes to release its next seasonal beer, LeSexxxy Saison, at this location in March.

Following is an excerpt from the statement by Catawba Brewing owners Billy, Jetta and Scott Pyatt:

“Though this seems to be the project

Revelers around the world ring in 2014 – Asheville Citizen

NEW YORK (AP) – A world-wide wave of celebrations rang in 2014 with a dazzling 30-minute fireworks show in Dubai, a deluge of confetti in London that tasted as good as it looked and a lavish, boozy music-filled party throughout the streets of Las Vegas.

In freezing New York City’s Times Square, a sea of horn-tooting, hat-wearing revelers cheered and some even smooched as the famed crystal ball dropped at midnight.

Bronx-born U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor led the 60-second countdown and pushed the button that unleashed the shimmering orb with 2,688 crystals, a role usually filled by the New York City mayor.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, on his last day in office, sat out the celebration after 12 years on the job, while newly elected Mayor Bill de Blasio took the oath of office just after midnight at his Brooklyn home.

Kerrie McConaghy, 20, a university student visiting Times Square from Armagh, Ireland, was dancing and jumping up and down, donning a big blue top hat.

“It’s unbelievable here,” she said. “The lights, seeing the ball, hearing the music, all the people. It’s amazing.”

“TV doesn’t do this justice,” she said. “You have to be here to believe it.”

Marcus Ix, 34, visiting from Germany, gave

New Year’s Eve with Red Honey and friends

I’m not very good at New Year’s Eve — I can never decide what I want to do. And while I’m usually all about commitment, the idea of buying a ticket and seeing out the old/in the new in a single venue is seriously daunting. To make matters worse, there are always at least a dozen shows and parties happening around Asheville that sound too good to pass up, but driving from one to another on the most alcohol-saturated night of the year? No thanks.

This year, I let fate decide. Or circumstance. I met friends for hors d’oeuvres at The Imperial. The plan was to head over to the River Arts District for Hank West’s secret party in the Wedge Building. I hear it verged on epic. But as the night wore on, traffic grew more intimidating and my friends with a warm car decided to call it an early night, I realized the smart thing to do was stay downtown.

What to do? I saw a tweet that Red Honey was playing at Hotel Indigo, so I headed that way. Seeing a show in
